The Battle of Karánsebes, that fought in 1788 and which is the seventh episode of the Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792), is one of the most stupid battles in history.
At that time, the Austrians were allied with the Russians against the Ottoman Empire. On the nights of 17 and 18 September 1788, the Austrian army made of 100,000 soldiers camped at karansebes (Carensebes today in Romania). That night, the vanguard of the army was sent to patrol and watch the area, but rather than finding the enemy, they fell on gypsies who were selling alcohol and captivated them all.
The hussars of the vangard began to booze and attracted the attention of several infantry soldiers but did not want to share alcohol with them. A fight broke out and Amid the chaos, one of the infantry shouted « The Turks! The Turks! » And an excited soldier fired a shot which resulted in a total panic in the camp of the Austrian army and in total darkness the soldiers began to kill eachoter.
The Turks arrived on the scene two days later, and to their surprise, they found 10,000 dead and wounded Austrian soldiers. This allowed them to take the city of Karansebes without any difficulty.
