Hoplophobia is the irrational fear of firearms and armed people. It’s a neologism invented by the American firearms expert Jeff Cooper in 1962. The word is Greek in origin and it is derived from ‘hoplon’, which means weapon, and ‘phobos’ meaning fear.
This phobia is not listed in the Manual of Diagnostic and Statistics of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association. However, the Hoplophobia is listed in The Encyclopedia of phobias and anxieties and in the Oxford dictionary of psychology.
