In 18th century London, 1 in 5 women was a prostitute!

The growth of maritime trade in London during the 18th century brought more and more ships to the ports. This Growth was followed by an increase in prostitution to satisfy the desires of merchants and travelers.

Many women were forced into prostitution because of poverty. Others preferred to sell their bodies rather than work long hours as laundresses, servants or seamstresses.

At that time, it was normal to see people fornicating in public, even with minors.
